The University of Nebraska held a Google+ Hangout today featuring head Husker equipment manager Jay Terry. If you were paying attention, you might have noticed something odd.
In the backdrop was the standard Nebraska helmet along with the alternate dome and jersey for this weekend’s game, but something was out of place.
Could it be? A white “N” on a scarlet helmet? Well, technically that’s a crimson helmet, native to Norman, Oklahoma.
However, if you paid attention to rumors this past summer regarding a black Nebraska helmet, after the initial surge of excitement at the Huskers wearing such equipment, the accepted explanation was that the gear was merely a Texas Tech shell with the Huskers’ signature letter affixed.
Now, Nebraska’s wearing black helmets this weekend.
Could we be seeing the prototype for a new alternate uniform? Might crimson turn to scarlet? Stay tuned.

I like the red helmets! Thanks for pointing that out Brandon.
Nice catch! Maybe we can finally get the black jerseys.
Jay also commented that they’ve got a silver helmet tucked away. I’d love to see a LiquidMetal shell like Oregon’s with a glossy red “N”.
I think they should just have new helmets every week. That would be way more fun. I’m thinking they had several prototypes, and this was one of them.
Was at the book store Wednesday on my trip to Lincoln, and I saw the jerseys in person. Pretty cool. Also saw regular red jerseys with the first year in the Big Ten patch at regular price. Interesting.
