The Seattle Seahawks Need to Pay Russell Wilson

Over the past several weeks of the NFL offseason, several big deals have come through for people like Dez Bryant and Demaryius Thomas, among others. Now, after his second Super Bowl appearance, Russell Wilson is entering the final season of his rookie contract which will pay him just over $1.5 million for the 2015 season. I think it’s fair to say that everyone agrees that Russell Wilson deserves the max contract due to the success he has had in just three seasons as a starter for the Seattle Seahawks. But that doesn’t mean everyone agrees that the Seahawks should pay Russell Wilson the max contract that would make him the highest-paid quarterback. Their reason for that? Well, the Seahawks need money to pay other big-name players and by spending all of their money on Wilson they diminish the chances of keeping those players in years to come.¬†Granted, Russell Wilson still has a whole year left on his contract, but if the Seahawks want to do this right, they need to pay him NOW.

As of last week, the Seahawks and Russell Wilson have agreed that once Wilson steps on the field for training camp next week, the contract negotiations will stop and they will focus on the season at hand. Like I mentioned before, fans want the Seahawks to save money on Wilson so they can spend it on players like Sherman, Lynch, and other future free agents so that the core of they’re dynamic team stays together. But if they don’t keep Russell Wilson, it will all dissolve. He becomes a free agent at the end of this year and who knows if he’ll test the waters with that. I’m sure he doesn’t want to leave Seattle, but if he sees another opportunity that will pay him more money and gives him an equal chance of winning, why not switch over? Let’s not forget, Wilson left NC State before his senior year to go and play for Wisconsin because he knew he had a better chance at winning big.

Sure, the Seahawks would not be in the elite-team category right now if it weren’t for their defense, but every team still needs a great quarterback. You’re not going to see a number one Seattle defense win a championship with someone like Blake Bortles, are you? Russell Wilson is a great leader in addition to a smart quarterback, so the Seahawks need to make sure he stays with them. They got him for a steal with how little they paid him while getting a Super Bowl out of him, so it’s time to give him what he deserves. The Seahawks begin their training camp on July 30th, so there is still some time for the two parties to get a deal done. They claim that they’re nowhere near finishing a deal, but come on Seahawks management, this guy has gotten you to two Super Bowls (and won you your first championship ever) so he deserves some mula.
