Going into the game tonight, it looked like there was no chance the Bulls would be able to extend forward Taj Gibson before the deadline making him a restricted free agent at the end of the season. Even Gibson was down on the prospects:
“I highly doubt it,” Gibson said prior to Wednesday’s win. “That’s the way I see it. Just got to put it behind me, move forward, try to win games.”
Well it looks like he changed his mind. Gibson agreed to a 4 year deal worth up to $38 million. Here is what Taj had to say:
”Pax and Gar stressed they wanted me here a long time,” Gibson said. “It dawned on me I didn’t want to be a selfish player. I wanted to get what’s fair. It’s a lot of money. I can’t really turn it down, especially for the security. You never know what can happen during the year. At any given moment, I could pull a groin or hurt my knee.”
That was a bit of a strange statement to me but it sounds like he just didn’t want to take a risk. As for the terms of the contract, it is a fair deal in my eyes and matches his value to the team. Now if only the Bulls could amnesty Boozer and get a second star…
