The good news for Nebraska is that Rex Burkhead will not need surgery at this time. It seems like the Huskers had a plan to not over-work Rex this week against Southern Miss, so the team was prepared when Rex went down. However, they will need their 1300-yard rusher to win the conference, so it would be wise to ease him back into the lineup. The team does have confidence in the guys behind him, just check the quote from Bo Pelini:
“We have a lot of confidence in those backs,” Pelini said. “They’re talented guys. I like how they played, how they responded.” Running backs coach Ron Brown also expressed confidence in the I-Backs behind Rex: “We knew Ameer was going to be a good player for us, and we planned on using him to take some load off Rex. Then there’s Braylon and Imani, powerful runner that he is. We love our stable of running backs and we’re planning on using them all anyway. It was just earlier than we hoped.”
The Huskers will be tested in the next game against UCLA but should be able to win without Rex Burkhead. He will want to play, but the staff should probably be very cautious and save him for the B1G Ten season when they will need him the most.
