Hits & Botches: Raw 9/7

About ten minutes before Raw started I talked myself into the idea that Raw wasn’t going to suck, my theory was next week is Monday Night Football’s opening night and Raw needs to dominate tonight in order to bring us back next week…only thing keeping that idea from working was a combo of the writers and the fact that it’s a Holiday Raw.

Holiday Raw’s are never good….ever. This clearly wasn’t the exception to the rule and I was meant to spend the unofficial last night of the summer suffering through a bland and poorly put together Monday Night Raw.

Opening Segment: Hit
I’ll start off by saying I’m not a huge fan of Sting vs Seth Rollins for the title, I’m equally not a fan of the idea that this feud’s backstory is Sting stealing a statue. We are supposed to be in a Reality Era, in reality the McMahons could easily afford to purchase another statue for Seth…so this feud has all but lost me within the first week.

I just going to put my dislike for this feud on the back burner and say that Seth Rollins might be the best overall product in the WWE right now. He can get heat when he needs to, he might be top five most athletic on the roster, and he shows a certain level of confidence on the mic that is missing in a lot of the guys on the roster. With all that being said I really wish they wouldn’t keep giving him the same round of talent to face they do every world champion.

We can push the John Cena’s and Randy Orton’s to the side and give Rollins something fresh like a Cesaro. With PPV buys seeming like they no longer matter whats the issue with going outside of the formula and throwing in a few new variables. If it doesn’t work you can easily move on…we’ve seen it happen before.

I’m just saying Sheamus walking around with the briefcase doesn’t seem to float anybody’s boat.

Backstage Promo: Hit
I know I just explained how I want Rollins to be facing fresher talent, and move away from the same formula, but I’m also low key excited to see the Triple H and Rollins feud eventually roll out. This backstage segment was just another tease at what their potential feud. With Triple H putting Rollins in two matches tonight.

I’m not going to lie, at this point I was looking forward to the rest of Raw. It really seemed like this was going to be the night that holiday Raw didn’t suck…boy did they honeydick me.

Paige vs. Sasha Banks: Hit
Someone asked me how this match was and I wanted to tell them that it was a great showing between these two, because it normally is (forget last week’s beat the clock). But this week’s match fell flat for some reason. I can’t blame either girl because they were in there putting on a good match, there was just something about it that seemed completely off to me.

It’s possible that I’ve just grown so numb to the Divas Revolution and how their matches rarely mean anything. Whatever the case maybe I’m hoping that it changes as things start to unfold. Paige is clearly being teased to turn heel in the coming months and with that we will see a likely feud between her and Charlotte, which should be great. The only thing I’m worried about is what will become of Becky Lynch when that happens…

The Ascension vs. Dean Ambrose and Roman Reigns: Botch
I guess the Ascension aren’t going to be Stardust’s henchmen after all…I was really ready to get behind the Cosmic Wasteland. I’m sure there is still a good chance that we see some sort of union between them down the road, but for now they are just in tag team wasteland as they get bounced on by Reigns & Ambrose.

After the match we get a Wyatt Family promo, which I’m starting to really enjoy again. It just seems like Bray stopped talking in circles and instead is making simple to the point statements. While the feud still does nothing for me I’m at least intrigued as to who the third man will be with Ambrose & Reigns.

The TMZ like package for Lana/Ziggler vs Summer/Rusev was different…can’t say it was a good different but at least they are trying something new.

Ryback vs. Seth Rollins: Hit
Bret Hart recently attacked the job that the WWE agents & producers do, I was a little taken back by his statements because he delivered them in a rather blunt manner, but then I found myself thinking about what he said during this match. Rollins and Ryback were putting on a quality match when we heard the harsh caw of the crow. I totally get why Sting interrupted the match, but it was already our second distraction that lead to a pin fall that night… I get that they want everyone to look strong, but a clean finish would be nice. Granted this was the right one for this match it wasn’t for the others tonight.

Backstage segment: Hit
I’m not going to lie at this point I was all but ready to check out of Raw tonight and just watch the rest on my DVR tomorrow morning, but those guys from the New Day pulled me right back in. These three guys are on the hottest streak in the tag team division in years and with the Dudleys back it only elevates them more. Edge & Christian were perfect in their roles…I just wish we could get this natural feeling more often.

Rusev/Summer Rae Segment: Botch
This whole feud is starting to make less sense then when it started. With Lana out of commission for the foreseeable future my guess is that they wrap things up at Night of Champions and that isn’t soon enough. While I’m not exactly sure where each guy goes from here I’m just tired of the Lifetime level of drama that they are force feeding us with this feud. I’m pretty sure the Save by the Bell movie was put together better than this mess.

Randy Orton vs. Sheamus: Hit
I’m shocked that I wrote the words hit next to Randy Orton vs. Sheamus but I did. Compare this match to the rest of what we had tonight and it wasn’t bad at all…especially if you blocked out the thousand other matches these two have had with one another.

Following the match the Wyatt Family attacked Orton for talking to Ambrose & Reigns…If I had to make a bet I would say that Orton has been written off television for his fall vacation and will return to feud with the Wyatt’s come mid-fall/early winter. Not sold on the idea that he is the third man for the six man tag at night of champions, but this is a great way to tease that it’s him.

The Dudley Boys vs. Los Matadores: Botch
It’s fantastic to have the Dudley Boys back in the WWE, they really add a lot to the tag team division, at least what’s left of it. But this match didn’t need to happen…

I’m actually not sure what the point of all this was. If I were to listen to the rumor mill I would assume that this is the start to Los Matadores repackaging, but it also could just be the end of Torito.

Cesaro vs. The Miz: Neutral
This was the best match of the night….until the end. Hey here is an idea let Cesaro pick up the win and then have Big Show making his way down to chase off Miz. Also why have Big Show knock out Cesaro? Cesaro is over and isn’t Big Show attempting to be some sort of rule bending face? Just walk past him and don’t do anything.

I’m not a road agent or booker…I’m just a guy who reviews pro-wrestling but in my opinion this was the shittiest way to handle the entire match. The fans are only going to resent the writers/agents more for how Cesaro is being handled and no one is going to show Big Show any attention outside their retirement chants. I wish they would just do better…there are at least 20 writers on staff and this is what the outcome is.

Divas Segment: Botch
Chris Jericho said it best…this isn’t working because they are trying to push 9 different people at the same time and this segment was a pretty good example of it. We have Charlotte who is going to try to be Divas champion, Nikki who might break the record, Paige who is starting to become jealous, Brie, Alicia and Becky who are fighting to get a word in and what was this for again?

The tease on the streak being broke or not is fine, but did we really need all this for that? Also just one promo without a Woooo! Please?

John Cena and The Prime Time Players vs. The New Day and Seth Rollins

The highlight of this was the guy who just casually strolled down the entrance with Rollins for that brief moment.

Aside from him all I cared about was what Xavier Woods was going to do next… normally he doesn’t take my attention completely away from the match, but tonight he did because I could honestly careless about the outcome I just wanted to see the Big E dance.

After the match was done it was time to celebrate, but before we could turn out TV’s off and tune into Stone Cold’s Not a Podcast feature Edge and Christian we had to finally catch up with Sting and watch him destroy the statue….who would have thought it would destroy it OH MY GOD!!!!!

At least we had Edge and Christian to make up for all of this.
