Hits & Botches: Raw 8/31

Maybe I was a bit hungover from SummerSlam weekend, but this week I wasn’t as amped as I should have been for Raw. I mean they were opening the show up with 56-year-old icon…yeah I think that actually might be why I wasn’t excited.

Don’t get me wrong I was a fan of Sting for the majority of his career but there was a time long ago that he should have wiped off the paint and hung up the boots…so now isn’t really the time I want to see him challenging for the WWE title when Seth Rollins could be facing off against just about anyone in a great match.

I get it the story is captivating but honestly is it? Do we really want to see Sting win? For sure I don’t want to see the title anywhere near him. You could honestly put the title on Zack Ryder over Sting and I’d be like sound good to me.

I’m not sure why we need this on TV, let alone of PPV but we are getting it. I would like to add put Sting in a special attraction match like at WrestleMania and I’m okay with it, put him in the main event and I’m going to bitch about how he needs to retire and preserve his body.

Opening: Botch
I’m sure Sting is in fantastic shape for his age, but do I really want to see him in the ring with Crossfit Jesus? The answer is no, nope, not a chance. What I did like about this whole thing was how it plants the seeds for Triple H vs Rollins, which is a special attraction match I could get behind. Sting teased the idea and after he was done killing my vibe Stephanie cemented the idea in the back when she told Rollins he wasn’t half the man Hunter is.

Dolph Ziggler vs Rusev: Botch
I really wish we had a hot start to Raw this week, I was tired and needed something to pick me up. Rusev & Ziggler have been mediocre so far with this match being just another notch in their feud. They’ve started to really tease the idea of Summer Rae and Lana wrestling which adds something fresh to it but they really need to add something special or just end it already.

Beat the Clock Match: Becky Lynch vs. Alicia Fox: Hit
It was clear from the start that Becky Lynch wasn’t going to get the win in this competition, while I was almost positive that at least Charlotte and she would win their respective matches.

I think it’s starting to pretty obvious that this angle is going nowhere fast. Charlotte will win the beat the clock and go on to face Nikki and we will all questions if she will win and what role John Cena played in it all and the Divas will fade to the back. It would be great if they got a proper angle or just a concept that was completely forced.

Regardless Becky & Alicia had a pretty solid match here. Hopefully when this is over these two still get plenty of TV time because they deserve it.

Backstage Segment: Botch
Really we are going to go with a sexual assault storyline? I’m not sure if this is where it’s going but I’ve already checked out of the feud.

WWE Intercontinental Title Match: Big Show vs. Ryback: Botch
I’m starting to feel like the two grumpy men in the balcony on the Muppets. This is a bad show, you can try and justify it by saying a few nice things but as a whole I’m ready to turn it off and go to bed. Yet another feud that has gone on too long, with the only bright light being that they continue to tease Big Show’s retirement.

Beat the Clock Challenge Match: Charlotte vs. Brie Bella: Botch
1:41…they couldn’t even tease like it was going to be close? Honestly I’m starting to question why I’m still watching at this point. This show has been a dumpster fire for the majority of the night and I’m not sure much can fix this.

Cesaro vs. Kevin Owens: Hit
Well thank you wrestling gods for giving me a least something to enjoy tonight. I honestly am starting to feel like a smarky ass tonight hating on everything. This was another good match between these two. So badly do I wish they had the IC title in play in this feud, just to give it that edge against the other feuds out there.

I’m not sure where this feud goes, but for now I’m not against seeing this match up at least twice a month. Hopefully when this is said and done these two can enter into another great feud.

Braun Strowman vs. Dean Ambrose: Hit
I really like the big brute character and this one reminds me of old Kane so I really like it. Braun clearly isn’t the greatest in-ring talent out there but as long as they continue to hide his flaws behind Bray’s mic work and Harper’s in-ring work I’ll be fine with it. Ambrose played the role of crash test dummy well tonight.

I’m just curious who they bring in to team up with Ambrose & Reigns going forward?

Beat the Clock Challenge Match: Paige vs Sasha Banks: Botch
This was rushed more than be trying to undo a bra for the first time. These two can actually wrestle but instead of putting on a good match we get them corned into a horrible gimmick match and less than two minutes to pull off an entertaining story. I won’t even blame them for this mess, but this whole beat the clock challenge has ruined the flow of Raw in my opinion.

The New Day vs. The Dudley Boyz: Hit
Honestly the way tonight has been going as soon as the New Day’s music hit my mood changed. These guys have been nothing short of amazing over the last month and everything they’ve touched has been gold. The fact that the Dudley Boyz are back just means these guys are going to be even better.

While I could always do without the Prime Time Players doing commentary this was one of the best tag team matches in a long time. The Dudleys just know how to do everything right and the New Day have found their groove.

Honestly I was a little uneasy about New Day losing clean to the Dudleys in their face match together. One it would have made more sense for them to face a more expendable team tonight and build up for them to face off, but since they already had the match book…why not have someone interfere? PTP was sitting at ringside why not have them go after the Dudleys to make a statement?

Seth Rollins Closing Segment: Hit
We all agree that Seth Rollins matches/segments are some of the best moments on Raw week in and week out…well this segment hasn’t lived up to his previous ones and I personally blame the lackluster feud idea with Sting.

We are in the reality era of WWE, where guys like Brock Lesnar are meant to simply destroy everyone. WWE has done a great job making us believe that Rollins can stand his own in the ring with Lesnar so why wouldn’t he simply destroy the 56-year-old poster boy for the dad bod?

I’d rather another Cena vs Rollins match then this…which we also get during this segment. There are so many viable options on this roster for Rollins to face and with PPV buys pretty much out the window why not experiment a little more?

I’m pretty sure the majority of us wouldn’t complain if you put Cesaro in a match with Rollins at Night of Champions. Regardless many of us will still hate watch, in hopes that we can get a glimmer of hope in one of these Raw’s.
