Hits & Botches: Raw 8/17

Tonight’s Raw gave us the return of John Cena & Dolph Ziggler along with so much hype you might actually need four hours just to fit it in. Tonight’s Raw felt like a go home show, but it didn’t feel like the go home show for Summerslam…which is not a good thing at all. I’m more excited for the NXT Takeover show then I am at the idea of sitting through four hours of Monday Night Raw a day early.

Takeover Brooklyn is going to be a fun show, that’s pretty clear. My issue is SummerSlam doesn’t feel important…even with Jon Stewart hosting. I get Stewart is fresh off the Daily Show and he is still white-hot, but he’s hosted Raw before so why is this important?

SummerSlam’s theme song is a can of worms I’m not going to open. I’m not sure if we should be happy that WWE picked something just as it was taking off or if we should be concerned that they picked that song for SummerSlam….it doesn’t really scream pro-wrestling.
But enough about SummerSlam let’s get to Raw.

Opening: Botch
I’m no longer in high and haven’t been for some time, but even when I was I didn’t care for pep rallies so this opening segment did nothing for me. It did however give us a nice flub from Stephanie McMahon. The only thing missing from this segment was the football team shouting behind these two.
Stephanie is one of the best heel personalities on this roster, but it seems like they’ve turned that down a notch. I’m sure her charity work has something to do with it, but I really want to see that Stephanie back. Maybe she can make fun of Daniel Bryan on the Season Finale of Tough Enough.

Randy Orton and Cesaro vs. Sheamus and Kevin Owens: Hit
It’s hard to call anything that involves Randy Orton, Kevin Owens & Cesaro in it a botch….so I won’t. This match was solid and we all understand that it was the last reminder that these guys are going to square off at SummerSlam.

There is a lot of talk about Sheamus cashing in at SummerSlam and that would be cool….only if he lost. As for Cesaro & Owens I fully expect them to put on a match of the night candidate….but wouldn’t be shocked if Owens shows a little bit of fatigue following his NXT title match the night before with Finn Balor. These four will just add to the already solid mid-card that SummerSlam has.

Undertaker promo: Botch
Yeah I said it…it was a laughable promo. I get that I’m the same six-year old boy who would hide behind his grandparents sofa when Taker’s music would hit…but give these kids something to believe in. Make it dark and mysterious….this just reminds me of someone’s crazy uncle getting wasted and trying to tell ghost stories around the fire pit.

Roman Reigns vs. Luke Harper: Hit
I really like Luke Harper and his matches with Reigns are always underrated. I almost wish that these two were the ones feuding and that we were getting a Luke Harper vs Roman Reigns match at SummerSlam. Instead we get a tag match were it seems pretty clear that a turn will happen. Dean Ambrose basically has to turn on Reigns to save what is left of his lame duck character.

If you guys were curious was Austin PG-13 would look like….take a look at Ambrose and image him having more charisma and an entertaining move set. I’m personally done trying to care about the Ambrose character, and this is coming from a guy who was excited for his work with Mic Foley & William Regal.

Hopefully we get to see more Harper after this is all said and done, but chances are he will fade into the back of this when it’s all said and done.

Tamina Snuka vs. Becky Lynch: Hit
When they first announced this match I just thought to myself what did Becky Lynch do to deserve this kind of punishment. Then the match started and I caught myself saying “This is the best Snuka match in the last year.”

It was actually a bearable Snuka match…the last time that happened Duece & Domino were holding gold. While it was Lynch’s best match I’m excited to see what she is going to bring to WWE in the future…it also made me forget how much I’ve hated how this Diva’s Revolution angle has gone.

Mark Henry vs. Rusev: The actual match Botch
This is such a bad matchup and it’s continued to happen week in and week out. I’m tired of it and tired of talking about it.

Post Henry vs Rusev: Hit
This was a nice return for Dolph Ziggler who we all expected to see run out and make the save for Lana. Lana’s little roundhouse kick wasn’t a thing of beauty but a cool thing done by a beauty. Ziggler vs Rusev should be good, but have been consistent over the last few months…hopefully they both can delivery at SummerSlam. I’m also looking for an epic cat fight from Lana and Summer Rae.

Ryback vs. The Miz: Botch
Can we just give the belt to Miz and move on with this already? Big Show understands that we are tired of seeing him on TV and Ryback is right behind him. This angle has been dragged on for far too long with little interest actually in it. I would have rather seen Ryback vacant the title and a tournament be held going into SummerSlam, but that’s just me.

John Cena/Seth Rollins Contract Signing: Hit
Seth Rollins really wants us to know that he is good at giving a promo, so much in fact that he goes on and on….and on with his promos. They have the right combo of witty and serious something that Cena has always had an issue with, but Rollins continues to go on too long, another issue that Cena has had. Cena came out and cut the same quality promo he does before every PPV and it hits just as hard as his theme.

This match should be one of the best match at SummerSlam, but I have a hard time seeing it as the main event. Clearly Brock Lesnar vs Undertaker has been built to be the main event and it needs to be, but this is going to be the better match.

The Prime Time Players and The Lucha Dragons vs. The New Day and Los Matadores: Botch
This match happened?

I’m kidding I watched it but honestly it may have made me careless about the tag team division if that’s possible at this point.

Fun teams all four of them, but not a single ounce of push behind them. No storylines really and it just seems like they go out to fill the three hours.

Nikki Bella vs. Sasha Banks: Hit
Why is it Sasha Banks can never win against Nikki clean? Also why is it Sasha never wears the NXT title to the ring?

These are two questions that crossed my mind during the course of this match into the finish and something I’m still having a difficult time understanding. Also I get that it was the last match of the night but don’t try to trick us into thinking this was the main event we all know Brock Lesnar is the main event and this is just to keep us on the channel. It was a solid match, and I’ll continue to watch these women put on quality matches but eventually we are going to need some sort of real storyline.

Brock Lesnar Final Segment: Hit
If Paul Heyman could wrestle even just a little bit and he might be the greatest wrestler in WWE history. The man sells ever match that he is involved in like it’s the greatest thing to ever be televised. It’s no wonder people believe anything he said during all those years in ECW, I honestly feel like Brock Lesnar could take out the entire U.S Army tanks and all.

When it comes to SummerSlam we all know that Twitter is going to be filled with tweets about how overhyped this match was, but honestly regardless of what happens Sunday I’m just excited to see Brock Lesnar toss the Undertaker around for one last time.

After all is said and done I can’t help but thinking how Paul Heyman should have run down the entire card instead of Triple H & Stephanie. I’m all for the ringmaster letting me know whats going to happen at the circus vs the pep squad getting me hyped for what’s going to be a swim meet at the local pool.
