Gabby Douglas has lived up to the hype and then some. Today she won individual gold in the women’s all-around event. With that gold medal she made some history. She not only became the first woman to win team gold and individual gold. She also became the first African-American woman to ever win the gold in the individual all-around.
There was a bit of controversy as Aly Raisman, the other Team USA woman in the event, tied for third with Aliya Mustafina of Russia but lost the bronze medal in a tie breaker. The day and perhaps these Olympics belonged to Gabby Douglas though, who became just the 4th US woman to win this event.
Gabby’s life won’t ever be quite the same after these games. You can expect Wheaties boxes, commercials, tv show cameos, and some appearances on the talk-show circuit. We will see a lot of her face in the near future, but we are likely to never forget the Flying Squirrel for a very long time.
