Dion Waiters, A Muslim, Plans To Stay In Locker Room For National Anthems

Many wondered why Cleveland Cavaliers guard Dion Waiters was nowhere to be found during the Cavs’ pregame festivies in their game against the Utah Jazz Wednesday night. We now know why.

Waiters, who has made the decision to rededicate himself to his Muslim faith this season, had the following to say when asked about his absence:

“It’s because of my religion. That’s why I stayed in the locker room.”

Interestingly enough, Cleveland.com reports that Waiters DID stand with the team during the national anthem during Cleveland’s match-up with the Denver Nuggets Friday night.

We’re curious to see what the media and fan reaction will be to Waiters’ decision considering former Denver Nuggets guard Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf had a rough go of it when he did something similar in the mid ’90s.

UPDATE:

Dion Waiters is calling all reports of him skipping the national anthem “BS”. What makes this development interesting is that the original report, which we sourced below, included quotes directly from Waiters himself.

Someone needs to tell Waiters it’s the national
anthem not the Lord’s prayer. Those college dropouts didn’t attend enough classes. Did he go to NC?
