Out from the forest and into the history books, Bubba Watson struck gold (or struck green) on the 20th hole at Augusta Sunday afternoon. For the second year in a row, the prestigious Green Jacket is tailored to fit a first time recipient. It took 2 sudden death holes to do it, but Watson is The Masters champion of 2012.
Already dubbed “The Miracle Shot” by some writers, Watson hit an absolute beauty from the mulch on the second playoff hole. Buried deep in the trees, Watson delivered a fantastic ball that hooked onto the green about 15 feet away from the pin.
This must have been absolutely devastating for one Louis “Albatross” Oosthuizen (who shocked Augusta with an incredible double eagle on the par-5 2nd). There was no recovering from Watson’s shot, and Oosthuizen missed a 20-footer for par that could’ve sent the playoff to another hole.
Bubba Watson made sure to put himself in contention on Sunday with 4 birdies in a row on the back 9. “If I’ve got a swing, I’ve got a shot” said Watson. He definitely took a long-drive tourney sized swing and came up with the biggest win of his career. And the greenest jacket in his wardrobe.
Believe it or not, this is the very first time a man named “Bubba” won at Augusta. Upon victory, he prevented a back-to-back winning scenario for South Africa. With Charles Schwartzel winning it in 2011, the back-to-back situation would have been the first since the good ol’ USA did it in 2006/2007 (Phil Mickelson/Zach Johnson). Phil “Lefty” Mickelson took himself right out of the race early on Sunday with his second triple-bogey of the tournament. I don’t think Tiger Woods even made it to Augusta.
