Week Eight College Football Picks

All but two featured games this week have a slim road favorite . . . and two of them are going down.

#25 Virginia Tech at Pitt (+4.5)

The annual ACC Coastal Ouroboros continues tonight. Pat Narduzzi’s Panthers can make Justin Fuente’s Hokies one-dimensional, but that dimension should be plenty. Virginia Tech 35, Pitt 27

#10 West Virginia at Oklahoma State (+3.5)

Overlooked in the conference of ninety-snap offenses and glitzy passing numbers: West Virginia’s defense, which has locked down Texas Tech and TCU in consecutive weeks. Oklahoma State doesn’t mount enough of an offensive to overcome it. West Virginia 34, Oklahoma State 21

#14 Florida vs. Georgia (+7) (Jacksonville, FL)

It’s been an up-and-down year for Kirby Smart’s Bulldogs. The Gators maintain their hex over their cocktail-slurping neighbor. Florida 30, Georgia 13

#8 Baylor at Texas (+3.5)

The other overlooked defense belongs to Baylor, but it hasn’t really been tested . . . and it still might not be, depending on which version of the Longhorn offense shows up. Baylor 42, Texas 35

#4 Washington at #17 Utah (+10)

The Utes are the only (currently) ranked team standing between Washington and a perfect regular season. Utah’s ground game keeps Washington off the field just enough to pull off an upset. Utah 38, Washington 33

#13 Boise State at Wyoming (+13.5)

Don’t look now but Craig Bohl has the Cowboys looking good at 5-2, with two-score wins over Colorado State and Air Force. Wyoming catches Boise sleeping. Wyoming 30, Boise 27

#7 Nebraska at #11 Wisconsin (-8.5)

Nebraska’s underrated defense matches up very well against Wisconsin, but it’s hospital ward of an offensive line can’t create enough opportunities for the Cornhuskers. Wisconsin 20, Nebraska 13

#3 Clemson at #12 Florida State (+4.5)

Clemson, our final road favorite of the week, visits a reinvigorated Seminole team. The Noles shook off a nightmarish start to the season to rebound to wins over Miami and Wake Forest (stop laughing), but can’t do enough against Deshaun Watson and Co. Clemson 26, Florida State 20
